As part of the observation of the centennial of the county in 1970, the McPherson County Historical Society and other county historical organizations convened at a banquet to honor the descendants of pioneer families in the county. Persons throughout the county were invited to submit names of their pioneer ancestors, as well as historical information, for inclusion in this register of pioneers.

Under the leadership of Linn Peterson (1920 - 2010), McPherson historian and long-time president of the MCHS, the number of pioneers added to the register increased steadily and now is over 1,000.  Peterson also added valuable historical information to many entries in the register. Some 40 years later, the MCHS and the other county historical organizations continue to induct families into the register at their annual dinner. Now, the many volumes of the register are available online in their entirety.
