The purpose of this position is to provide service to a diverse community of library users.  As a member of the service desk staff, the person in this front-line position is instrumental in forming our patrons’ first impressions of the library.

 

Hours:  Full-time, 40 hours

               Monday-Friday with 1-2 weekend shifts per month

 

Reports to:  Circulation Coordinator

 

Basic Responsibilities include:

 Works effectively as part of the circulation desk team.

 Checks in/out library materials.

 Shelves books, magazines, and other library materials.

 Processes new and renewal patron registrations.

 Provides reference assistance, including reader’s advisory assistance and assisting patrons with local history or genealogy research.

 Assists patrons with reserve and interlibrary loan requests.

 Assists patrons in using the public access catalog and other library technology.

 Checks and straightens an assigned section of the collection.

 Opens and closes the building according to schedule.

 Other duties and projects as assigned.

  

Responsibilities on an assigned basis may include:

 Assist with mending or repair of library materials

 Assist with the interlibrary loan system and daily duties

 Assist patrons with basic genealogy or local history research found on MPL website or in the McPherson Room

 Contacts patrons regarding overdue, damaged, or lost materials

 Manages inventory of assigned sections

 Helps with events scheduled outside of normal work hours

 Other duties and projects as assigned

 

Educational Requirements:

 A high school diploma or G.E.D.

 

Age Requirements:

 Must be 18 years of age or older

 

Salary:

 This position starts at $12/hour with opportunity for increases.

Physical Ability Requirements:

 The position requires the physical ability to:

·        Push a loaded book cart weighing up to 250 pounds.

·        Reach, bend, or stoop to reach library materials on shelves.

·        Use manually operated office tools and supplies (scissors, stapler, etc)

·        Communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing.

·        File and sort items in accordance with established procedures based on alphabetic and numeric coding.

·        Use computer keyboards and read video display screens.

·        Perform repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy.

·        Stand/walk for extended periods of time.
